How to Require an Initiation Fee Product

Make a product such as an initiation fee required for the right accounts using Show / Hide / Require Rules.

Use Show / Hide / Require Rules to make a product, like an initiation fee, required for the right accounts at checkout, while optional products (like guest credits or house guest fees) show only to specific accounts.

Example: Require an Initiation Fee for Offered Memberships

This example makes an Initiation Fee product required for accounts that have been offered a membership and are unpaid.

Step 1: Open the Product

  • Go to Finances > Products.

  • Click the product you want to apply rules to (for example, Initiation Fee).

  • Make sure the Fee Type is set to Initiation Fee.

Step 2: Turn On Rules

  • Scroll down to the Show / Hide / Require Rules section.

  • Check Apply Rules.

  • Set Rule Action to Require, since this is a mandatory product. The other options are Show, Disable, and Hide.

Step 3: Add an Account Type Rule

  • Click Add Rule, then Select Rule Type and choose Account Type.

  • Set Comparison to Is (other options: Is Any Of, Is Not).

  • Set Field to Offered Membership. The product is now required for accounts currently being offered a membership.

  • Set Next Rule Relationship to And.

Note: If you are not adding another rule, leave Next Rule Relationship blank.

Step 4: Add a Payment Status Rule

  • Click Add Rule, then Select Rule Type and choose Account Payment Status.

  • Set Comparison to Is.

  • Set Field to Unpaid (options: Unpaid, Pending, Paid).

  • The product is now required for accounts that are Offered Membership AND Unpaid.

Note: A rule with no value selected is ignored. The products list shows an Issues badge until you fix it.

Step 5: Save the Product

  • Scroll to the top and click Update.

Advanced: Selected Product Rules

  • Use the Selected Product rule type to show or hide a product based on which other products the member selects on the payment screen.

  • Most common use: show the Initiation Fee only after the member selects one of several membership products, and the account also meets other conditions (for example Offered Membership account type and Unpaid payment status).

  • This keeps conditional products from showing until they are relevant.

See Show/Hide/Require Rules for Products for all rule types and options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an account be prompted to pay the membership fee more than once in the same season?

No. As long as the product uses the Membership Fee fee type, the account's Payment Status changes to Paid once the fee is purchased. Rules tied to unpaid accounts then stop applying, so the member is not prompted to pay again.
