Bond/Equity Fee + Membership Fee

Charge a one-time Bond or Equity Fee plus annual membership dues, using an account tag so the bond is only charged once.

This setup charges a one-time Bond or Equity Fee when a family joins, plus the regular annual Membership dues. An account tag remembers who has already paid the bond, so it is never charged twice.

What You'll Build

  • Membership product: annual dues (Fee Type: Membership Fee), paid every season.

  • Bond/Equity product: a one-time fee (Fee Type: Equity Fee), required only for accounts that don't have the Bond Paid tag.

  • Bond Paid account tag: added automatically when the bond is paid.

Example: Family Membership $600 every season + Bond $2,000 once. A new family pays $2,600 in their first season; after that they pay $600.

Before You Begin

  • The Equity Fee and Membership Fee fee types exist by default. If your club calls it a "Bond," you can use Equity Fee or create your own fee type. See Create or Edit Fee Types.

  • If some existing members have already paid their bond, you'll tag them in Step 2 so they aren't charged.

Step 1: Create the Bond Paid Tag

  • Click Settings in the admin menu and go to Members > Account Tags.

  • Click Add Tag, enter Bond Paid as the Tag Name, and click Add.

  • Optional: check Visible on Member Dashboard so members can see their bond is paid.

Step 2: Tag Members Who Already Paid

  • Go to Membership > Accounts and select the accounts that have already paid their bond.

  • Click Bulk Actions > Update Tags, choose Add, select Bond Paid, and click Apply.

Note: Do this before publishing the Bond product. Any account without the tag will be required to pay the bond.

Step 3: Create the Membership Product

  • Go to Finances > Products and click Add New.

  • Enter the Product Name (for example "2026 Family Membership") and select Membership Fee in the Fee Type box.

  • In Flat Rate Pricing, enter the amount in Price (no dollar sign), for example 600.

  • In Show / Hide / Require Rules, turn on Apply Rules, set Rule Action to Require, and add an Account Type rule for the account types that pay dues.

  • Click Publish.

Note: Paying a Membership Fee product marks the account as Paid. The Bond product does not change payment status.

Step 4: Create the Bond/Equity Product

  • Go to Finances > Products and click Add New.

  • Enter the Product Name (for example "Bond") and select Equity Fee (or your bond fee type) in the Fee Type box.

  • In Flat Rate Pricing, enter the amount in Price, for example 2000.

Require it only for accounts that haven't paid:

  • In Show / Hide / Require Rules, turn on Apply Rules and set Rule Action to Require.

  • Click Add Rule, choose Account Tag, set Comparison to Is Not, and select Bond Paid.

  • Optional: add an Account Type rule (with Next Rule Relationship set to And) if only certain account types owe a bond.

Tag the account automatically after payment:

  • In Post Payment Action, check Apply Post Payment Action and click Add Rule.

  • Starting condition: click Add Condition, choose Account Tag, set Does Not Have Tag, and select Bond Paid.

  • New value: click Choose New Value, choose Account Tag, set Action to Add Tag, and select Bond Paid.

  • Click Publish.

Step 5: Test Before Going Live

  • Go to Membership > Accounts, click the ... next to a test account without the Bond Paid tag, and choose Switch to.

  • Go to Make a Payment and check that both the membership and the Bond appear with the right prices.

  • Process a test payment, then Switch back and open the account's Tags tab. Bond Paid should now be highlighted.

  • Switch to the account again. The Bond should no longer appear. See How to Test Membership Products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will members be charged the bond again next season?

No. The Bond Paid tag stays on the account until you remove it, so the Bond product stays hidden. Don't remove this tag in your end-of-season tag cleanup.

Why use a tag instead of an account type?

Account types and payment status change from season to season. A tag stays put, so it's a reliable record of who has paid the bond.

Can members pay the bond in installments?

How do I see who has paid the bond?

On Membership > Accounts, click Filters and choose the Bond Paid tag. You can save it as a view.
