📱 Push notifications require the Member Splash mobile app. Members must have the app installed on their phone and have notifications enabled in order to receive push notifications. Members who have not installed the app — or who have not opted in to notifications — will not receive them. Learn how to get your members set up with the app →
What Are Push Notifications?
Push notifications are real-time alerts sent directly to members' phones through the Member Splash app. Unlike emails, they appear on the member's lock screen and home screen — making them ideal for time-sensitive messages like pool closures, weather delays, last-minute event reminders, or urgent club announcements.
Push notifications are sent from your admin panel and delivered instantly to all members who have the app installed and notifications enabled.
Push Notifications vs. Member Mail — Which Should I Use?
| Push Notifications | Member Mail (Email) |
Best for | Urgent, time-sensitive messages | Detailed communications, newsletters, forms |
Requires | App installed + notifications enabled | Valid email address on file |
Delivery | Instant — appears on lock screen | Depends on email provider; may be delayed |
Audience targeting | Same segments as Member Mail (account type, tags, payment status) | Same segments as push notifications |
Content | Short message — no rich formatting or attachments | Full HTML, images, attachments |
History | Saved in admin panel and visible in the app | Saved in email campaigns history |
For important communications — especially anything requiring action from members — consider sending both a push notification and a Member Mail email to reach the broadest possible audience.
Before You Send: Get Members on the App
Push notifications are only delivered to members who have the Member Splash app installed and have opted in to notifications. A push notification sent to a club where no members have the app installed will reach nobody.
To maximize reach before sending your first push notification:
Make sure your club's install link and QR code are set up — Communications > Mobile App
Share the app with members via a Member Mail email, your website, and printed signs at the club
Check your subscriber count (see Viewing Your Subscribers below) before sending to understand your current reach
💡 Tip: Members who skip the notification prompt on first install can still turn notifications on later from the Account screen in the app. If a member says they're not receiving push notifications, that's the first place to check.
How to Send a Push Notification
In your admin panel, go to Communications > Push Notifications
Click New Notification
Enter your message — keep it short and clear. Push notifications appear on a phone screen, so brevity works best
Select your audience (see Audience Targeting below)
Click Send
The notification is delivered instantly to all subscribers who match the audience criteria you selected.
⚠️ Push notifications cannot be recalled after sending. Double-check your message and audience selection before clicking Send.
Audience Targeting
Push notifications support the same audience segments as Member Mail. You can target by:
Account type — for example, send only to Full Member accounts
Account tags — for example, send only to accounts tagged "Swim Team"
Payment status — for example, send only to accounts with a balance due
Leave all filters blank to send to all app subscribers regardless of account type or tag.
💡 Example use cases for targeted notifications:
— Send a swim team practice cancellation only to accounts tagged "Swim Team"
— Send a payment reminder only to accounts with an outstanding balance
— Send a member-type-specific announcement to Full Members only
Notification History
A full history of all push notifications sent by your club is available in two places:
Admin panel: Communications > Push Notifications — shows all sent notifications with timestamps and audience details
The member app: Members can view their notification history from within the app at any time — useful if a member missed a notification when it was first sent
Notification history also tracks delivery status per device. Two terms you may see:
Failed — the notification didn't get delivered to that device this time. This is just a delivery count, not a permanent state — the device stays on the list, and delivery is attempted again the next time a notification is sent.
Pruned — the subscription was automatically removed after a permanent delivery failure, such as an invalid device or browser registration (for example, after a member reinstalls the app, clears app data, or revokes notification permissions). Once a subscription is pruned, the system stops sending to it entirely.
Viewing Pruned Subscriptions
Use the Pruned tab to identify members whose push-notification subscriptions were automatically removed after a failed delivery. This list helps your club follow up with members who may no longer be receiving push notifications.
Go to Communications > Push Notifications
Click the Pruned tab
Use the available filters — Date range, Notification, Account type, and Member search — to narrow the list
Review the notification that triggered the removal and the affected device or devices for each member/broadcast record
Export the filtered list to CSV when you need to follow up outside Member Splash
The list contains one row per broadcast/member record and can be filtered or exported for outreach and remediation.
⚠️ Older records: Some supporting details may be blank for existing records until the next scheduled release version bump.
📝 Internal review before publishing: Confirm the final labels for the Pruned tab and filters, and add a current screenshot of the Pruned tab. Remove this note before publishing.
Viewing Your Subscribers
To see which members are currently opted in to push notifications:
Go to Communications > Push Notifications
Click the Subscribers tab
This shows a list of all accounts that have the app installed and notifications enabled. Use this to gauge your reach before sending and to identify members who haven't yet installed the app.
How Members Opt In and Out
Members control their own notification preferences:
On first install: The app prompts members to allow notifications. Members who accept are immediately subscribed
After install: Members can turn notifications on or off at any time from the Account screen in the app
Device settings: Members can also manage notification permissions through their phone's Settings app. If a member has blocked notifications at the device level, they will not receive push notifications even if the in-app toggle is on
Admins cannot override a member's notification preference — if a member has opted out, they will not receive push notifications.
Best Practices
Keep it short. Push notifications appear on a small screen. Lead with the most important information and keep the message to 1-2 sentences.
Use them for urgency. Reserve push notifications for time-sensitive messages — closures, cancellations, weather delays. Overuse will lead members to opt out.
Pair with email for important messages. Not all members have the app. For anything critical, send a Member Mail email at the same time.
Check your subscriber count first. Knowing how many subscribers you have before sending helps set expectations on reach.
Promote the app early in the season. The more members who install the app before opening day, the more effective your push notifications will be all season long.
Frequently Asked Questions
A member says they're not getting push notifications — what should I check?
First, confirm the member has the app installed and is logged into your club. Then ask them to check the Account screen in the app to confirm notifications are turned on. If the toggle is on but they're still not receiving notifications, they may have blocked notifications at the device level — they'll need to re-enable them in their phone's Settings app.
Can I schedule a push notification to send at a specific time?
At this time, push notifications send immediately. Scheduling is not currently available.
Can I send a push notification to a single member?
Not directly — push notifications are audience-based. For individual member outreach, use Member Mail or contact the member directly.
Will members who don't have the app receive push notifications via email instead?
No — push notifications are only delivered through the app. Members without the app will not receive them. This is why pairing push notifications with Member Mail is recommended for important communications.
Is there a limit to how many push notifications I can send?
There is no hard limit. However, sending too many notifications may cause members to opt out — use them thoughtfully.
What's the difference between a "failed" and a "pruned" device in notification history?
Failed means a single delivery attempt didn't go through — the device stays on the list and will get the next notification you send. Pruned means the subscription was automatically removed after a permanent delivery failure or because the device/browser registration no longer exists — the system stops sending to it entirely.
