Understanding Your Website URL Options

Updated this week

When setting up your Member Splash website, you'll need to choose between two URL options: a Custom Domain or a Subdomain. This article will help you understand the differences and choose the right option for your swim club.

What's the Difference?

Custom Domain

A custom domain is a fully independent web address that your swim club owns and manages.

Example: www.sunnydayswimclub.com

Key Features:

  • Your swim club must purchase and host the domain (typically through providers like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or similar services)

  • Provides a professional, branded web address

  • Your club owns and controls the domain

  • Many clubs already have an established domain in place

  • Requires DNS configuration to point to Member Splash

Best For: Clubs that want complete brand control and already have (or are willing to purchase) their own domain name.

Subdomain

A subdomain is hosted by Member Splash and acts as a portal nested under the Member Splash domain.

Example: sunnydayswimclub.membersplash.com

Key Features:

  • Hosted by Member Splash at no additional cost

  • Quick and easy setup with no DNS configuration required

  • Still personalized with your club's name

  • Can be used alongside a custom domain if needed

  • Member Splash handles all technical hosting

Best For: Clubs that want a simple, cost-effective solution without the need to purchase or manage a separate domain.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Choose a Custom Domain if:

  • You already own a domain name

  • You want a fully independent web address

  • Brand control is important to your club

  • You're comfortable with or have support for DNS configuration

Choose a Subdomain if:

  • You want to get started quickly

  • You prefer not to manage domain registration and renewal

  • Cost savings are a priority

  • You're comfortable with having "membersplash.com" in your URL

Can I Switch Later?

Yes! You can start with a subdomain and upgrade to a custom domain later, or vice versa. Contact Member Splash support if you'd like to make changes to your URL configuration.
